5 Potential Jobs In Freelance Writing

By Kylie Exline on June 19, 2016

As writers, we understand the difficulty level of actually writing something worth submitting and being read, as well as finding jobs worthy of our rhetoric.

The truth of the matter is, there is always something to write about. The issue however, is discovering your audience and medium. Platforms exist all over the place, believe it or not. But wait, we desire to also receive payment for our voice, so that is another problem in itself.

Being a freelance writer has its perks. I mean, you are not permanently employed by one person/company. But that can also sometimes be the downfall of working as a freelancer.

To discover the potential jobs in freelance writing, read below. And I must warn you, this may get you slightly excited that such opportunities exist.

Articles

Alright, so let us start with the textbook definition of a freelancer. Basically, it is when you work for various companies at separate times, as opposed to only having one boss. This allows any writer to have a solid resume.

You can freelance for articles because they are being written every day. Like mentioned before, there will always be stories to write, people to interview, and topics to discuss. No excuses, people.

Articles are a good route to take because they are probably the easiest to be hired for. You can and very much should apply to local papers, online sites, and even magazines. You will most likely get paid per article, and will have the option of picking your topics or having them assigned. Prepare for deadlines, guys.

Proofreader

Great at locating errors and grammatical mistakes? Then you found your proper job title. Just make certain that you are actually good at proofreading, because that would not be good if you were not.

Companies are consistently looking for editors to proofread their PR releases, social media accounts, and company advertising. Basically, there are endless opportunities to select from out there in the real world.

There are various sites you can visit to see how decent you are at proofreading, such as “Merriam-Webster’s Concise Handbook for Writers.” I would definitely recommend it. I would also advise applying to places other than writing companies. There are always options with law firms, small business companies, and even district offices, such as your senator.

Author

This is the dream job, amIright? Well, not for everyone, but it is a desire for many. You have to start your writing career somewhere, so the earlier you begin the process, the better.

As a freelancer, a way to get money is to work for a publishing house and attempt to get a publishing deal. Regardless if you are remotely good at writing, there is always room for improvement. Like they say, practice makes perfect.

E-books are a trending way to release a novel, spread the word through hashtags, and submit to many retailers. Whether local or not, it does not matter due to the lovely invention of technology. Plus, becoming an author instantly gives you the agency to win awards, have press releases, and even meet and greets.

Copywriter

This is a great aspect for freelance writers because you can make a nice paycheck doing this for sure. They are extremely necessary for website content. This includes webpages, web ads, and basically anything web related. It is great.

You can apply to communication departments, marketing campaigns, and of course any media production company. The key is to apply everywhere and then some — especially places that you would not originally think to apply for. This calls for less competition as well.

Copywriting allows you to venture off into becoming a novelist or screenwriter, or even to stay with the editing gig.

Blogger

This can probably be the most fun and exciting solely because you can literally write about anything on your mind at the time. It can be a satirical piece, editorial work, or a review on the latest “hot” album.

The best idea is to have a main topic because that is how you attract a larger audience and receive more attention for the writing. And the goal is for your readership to be high.

Blogging is also an easy way to depict your individualism through a site. You have free rein to design your website, portray your perspective on the subject matter, and use your voice in the way you so desire.

Being a freelance writer can be extremely tough in the pay department. The goal is to receive a paycheck, all while enjoying what and who you are writing for.

The good news is that it is very possible. You just have to put yourself out there. The worst thing is a no, and that can eventually very much turn into a yes.

There are various opportunities out there, you just have to be aware of them, apply to them, and continue the fight to become a well-known, acknowledged writer. Now go pick up a pen and notebook, or exit this webpage and begin the what feels like never-ending process of searching for opportunities.
